Clausen's War Art
George Clausen (1852-1944) served as an official war artist during World War I. However, as an older artist, he did not go to the front line but instead recorded activities on the home front.
Clausen's artistic response to the First World War explored the death of his daughter's fiancé, may have inspired his painting "Youth Mourning," which shows a young woman mourning in an empty landscape.
Clausen was concerned with the plight of civilian refugees. He also contributed six lithographs on the theme "Making Guns for the Government" to the print portfolio "Britain's Efforts and Ideals"
