What is the Most Ideal pH Value for Drinking Water?
The quality of the water we drink is as important as the quantity of water. Other than purity, the pH value of our drinking water is equally important to be concerned. So, what is the most ideal pH (Potential Hydrogen) value for drinking water?
First of all, let’s find out what pH means for water. Technically, pH is a measure of the activity of the hydrogen ion (H+) and is reported as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the hydrogen ion activity. The indicator for acidity and alkalinity is known as the pH value. The pH value is a good indicator of whether water is hard or soft.
The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, and that number can indicate whether a substance is acidic or basic. The pH of pure water is 7. In general, water with a pH lower than 7 is considered acidic, and with a pH greater than 7 is considered basic.
Water with a pH below 6.5 could be acidic, soft, and corrosive. Acidic water could contain metal ions such as iron, manganese, copper, lead, and zinc. In other words, acidic water contains elevated levels of toxic metals.
Water with a pH above 8.5 could indicate that the water is hard. Hard water does not pose a health risk, but can also cause aesthetic problems. These problems include an alkali taste to the water.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), consuming excessively acidic or alkaline water is harmful. Drinking water must have a pH value of 6.5-8.5 to fall within EPA standards, and they further note that even within the acceptable pH range, slightly high or low pH water can be unappealing for several reasons.
High-pH water has a slippery feel, tastes a bit like baking soda, and may leave deposits on fixtures. Low-pH water, on the other hand, may have a bitter or metallic taste, and may contribute to fixture corrosion.
However, consuming natural alkaline water is safe for you. The water often tastes sweeter than neutral water, thanks to minerals in it. Natural alkaline water claims that it offers more health benefits than neutral water like increased metabolism, cleansed colon, boosted immunity, and more.
